In Marcinelle two headstocks of a previous mine emerge from vegetation, while the surrounding area has been destined to public park.
They overhung two shafts of the Charbonnage de Monceau-Fontaine, also called “Pechòn”. Built at the start of the 19th Century, the mine was active untill 1975.
Not far there's the Buois du Cazier mine, now a museum, where the 8th August 1956 136 Italian miners died in the deep.
